Renaissance could have been a typical “out of the ways” village had it not been for their tyrannical leader, Angodor.
Angodor was the autocratic ruler of Renaissance. Ancestry: born in Craigmore, raised in Snadgore and eventually migrated to Renaissance with his stepmother Andracrueles, after the death of his father and a great accumulation of wealth.
His 23 year reign began with a bloody battle at the banks of the Espadon River. This battle was the means with which he took control of the village; with his wealth, warriors and manipulative powers of the press. The tale was permanently etched in the minds of his peoples through a steady stream of propaganda, posing as the free press of Renaissance.
Biweekly theatre attendance was required of the villagers; the theme of course always being “the Battle of the Espadon”. The repetition of the war tales kept the residents in the necessary state of constant fear, as warranted by a leader seeking government reliance and therefore guarantee of his non-contested dominion over the downtrodden village of Renaissance. After school programs would train the youth to be astute warriors with fencing lessons and computer-aided war simulations while toddlers would learn the basics of “stop, drop and roll” to alleviate mishaps with misfired burning arrows by the middle school children.
Angodor held tight reigns over the town along with his henchmen. All villagers' correspondence had to be approved by Angodor and also overseen by the FCC, the SPCA and the ACLU, all operating under the guise of the United Nations in NYC.
All mining operations were closely monitored to ensure that the 60% tax was immediately collected before payment to the Troves (villagers working in the mines). Traders were also immediately taxed. The main access roads of the Targe, the Kris and the Villein all had toll booths operated by Angodors' knights who collected the money in their full armor uniforms with the Crest of “A” for Angodor, clearly displayed for all to see.
Angodor could see all his wishes coming to fruition through the years...His escalated tax plan (1% tax increase per year for townspeople). Noone would dare to question his authority; the public beheadings saw to that! Everything seemed to be going according to plan for quite some time with his lavish feasts and Coronation balls held at the Green House, while the villagers scrimped and saved to feed their 2 children families.
All of a sudden though, Out of the blue something very strange was happening. The townspeople did not seem as down&out as usual, and this very gravely concerned him.
How could this be? All taxes had been accurately collected; his accountant and CFO saw to that! The trading post activities seemed to be the same level as the same quarter of last year, all recorded and displayed with advanced business analytics developed by “the best and the brightest” (members of his staff). The number of births and deaths were correlating fine thanks to his constant battles along the perimeters of Renaissance however something just did not measure up!
Somehow the forest of Fragidora did not seem as dark and dank as usual; something was brewing but he did not know what... But as you will soon see...he sure is about to find out!
